Will Kirstie Alley develop a weight loss program?

Wow. Kirstie Alley and Jenny Craig have parted ways, and now Kirstie may develop her own weight loss program.

Um, ok Kirstie, but didn’t you lose 75 lbs on Jenny Craig? So, why should anyone pay you for an unproven weight loss program? Or, will it be so similar to Jenny Craig that price wars break out?

Hmmmm…..

Can’t believe Jenny Craig didn’t have some kind of non-compete clause in that contract…

Five Bite Diet

Came across this one this evening: Taking several bites out of eating

The crux is, skip breakfast, have five bites of something with protein at lunch, five bites at dinner. Pretty simple. But it sure does risk missing a whole bunch of nutrients.

I don’t think it’s for me.

Update:

Wow, seeing a teenager commenting that she’s going to try it really shook me up. I posted this because I don’t think it’s a good idea. I don’t often recommend against a specific idea (I think Kimkins was the only thing so far), and usually take the passive-aggressive approach like I did above by saying it isn’t for me.

So, let me be clear - it isn’t for YOU, either!

Think about it this way: How many calories can you get into one bite of something moderately healthy - a piece of chicken, maybe? 100, tops? So, 500+500=1000.

That isn’t enough, and isn’t safe for very long! Growing bodies need PROTEIN and VITAMINS and even some CARBS and FAT. Balance it, keep it in moderation, but don’t try this STARVATION diet.

Kimkins a fraud

As I stated previously, I stay agnostic when it comes to programs.

That said, I can’t let this one past: Kimkins a fraud.

Be sure to check out the photos of “Kim”.

Additonally, I was happy to see links from Slamboard to Jimmy Moore’s apology for his behavior over the previous months. I literally took Jimmy off my RSS feed’s just days prior to his apology because I tired of precisely this behavior, so i was unaware of the apology. I may have to go back and see if anything has changed now that 6 weeks or so has passed.

I’m in the middle of moving it to a new host that is more stable and provides better support, then you’ll get my “Before” shot on 9/23, and an”After” shot, good or bad [whimper!], on New Year’s.

Join in. I don’t care what you do, as long as you do it.

Why I choose to stay agnostic on the subject of “programs”

When I first decided to start blogging, I didn’t feel comfortable about taking sides in the debates over low-carb vs. low-fat and countless other debates that rage amongst dieters, nutrition experts, and those that profit from either side. First, I just don’t know enough. Second, I am suspicious of nearly every “study” that comes out, because they’re all funded by someone, somewhere, that has an agenda.

My attitude has been, and will be, do what works for you. But, do it.

Oddly enough, I found a similar mindset in an unlikely place: Star Jones. Star has written a frank essay for Glamour about her weight loss, going public for the first time with the words “gastric-bypass” rather than “medical intervention”. While I’m always suspicious about the sincerity of celebrity mea culpas, I found some great advice:

Gastric bypass is a very serious procedure with its own set of risks. I’ve been afforded the luxury of consulting numerous doctors, specialists and colleagues who concluded that this surgery was the only way I could regain control of my life. It worked for me, but if you face a similar struggle, you’ll have to find what works for you. It isn’t an easy fix, and the recovery doesn’t end when you come out of anesthesia—that’s when the real work begins.

So weird to find myself in agreement with Star Jones, but there you go.

As for the idea that she wanted to “own up” to having gastric-bypass surgery… Why? First, she’s entitled to her privacy with regard to her medical decisions. But, she makes the point that it’s been therapeutic to share with people on an individual basis. Ok, it’s your business whether to share or not share. But there is an element of being embarassed about it:

But the complete truth is, I was scared of what people might think of me. I was afraid to be vulnerable, and ashamed at not being able to get myself under control without this procedure.

Hey, I’m not in the public eye so I can’t pretend to understand the fishbowl she lives in, much of which she takes responsibility for creating. But, making decisions to take the steps necessary to live a long, healthy life is never something of which to be embarrassed.

Here’s the takeaway: Find what works for you. Do it. You don’t owe anyone apologies or excuses.

The Hundred Day Head Start: How All This Got Started (and how you’re going to join me!)

Originally, I chose the Hundreddayheadstart.com domain because I wanted to set up a website to promote the idea of not waiting for New Year’s to start an exercise and diet program. I kicked it off on September 23.

I stopped on September 26. Doh!

So, we’re not going to wait for September 23. In fact, there is no kick-off date. Each of us needs to be accountable for starting our improvement programs NOW.

I started mine yesterday, May 28. My commitment is to walk 100 consecutive days - my previous streak was 117 days, last year, and documented heavily on my original diet blog, Run FatAssRun. My 8-year old daughter is taking part as well, committing to doing some kind of exercise every day until school starts (Summer vacation is already here in Florida). That’s somewhere around the last week in August for her. My goal would take me to September 4. For me, setting a goal like this gets me to get out and move even when there are other priorities. i just get up early and get out late, but the point is, I GET OUT!

I’ve been out two days in a row, walking 1.3 miles and 2 miles. It’s a start. Annie rode her bike with me yesterday, and had dance class for 45 minutes today. I watched a class several weeks ago, and it’s a good aerobic workout with lots of stretching and strengthening. I’d like to see her mix walking (progressing to jogging) with activities like dance, swimming, and extended playground time - a great total body workout for kids.

All of this takes me back to my high school cross-country days, when we did our “summer miles”. It was against state rules to hold organized practices before the start of school for cross-country, so our coach gave us a summer mileage goal, usually something like 700 to 1000 miles depending on ability. Believe it or not, we had a couple 1000 mile guys. Not me, mind you - I only did 750 miles. Of course, 16-yr old Tim could handle two-a-day runs; 40-yr old Tim can barely handle going up and down the steps in the house twice a day.

But, that should change, right?

So, anyone out there want to commit to making a big behavioral change over the next 100 days, and maybe build some habits that will change your life?

About HDHS

Hundred day Head Start is about motivation and support in starting and maintaining a diet and exercise program. I’m overweight also, so I’m going through this WITH you. I intend to stay out of the debates over low carb vs. low fat, Weight Watchers vs. well, everyone else, and other debates for which there are no answers, only studies paid for by the programs.

My view: Do what works for you.  But, do it now.

Hopefully, by the time you read this, I will have a forum up and running because I’d love to have a community that represents the spectrum of people trying to lose weight, get fit, and improve health.
