Weighing In

First, Lady Rose alerted everyone in the comments of a previous post about a post she was writing about a calendar from the National Institute of Heart & Lung Health. It looks really sharp, so check it out.

Second, my weigh-in sucked. No loss, no gain. I started well last week, but visited my parents over the weekend. Ate too much, and paid on the scale. Frustrating to be sure, because I was on a nice roll. But, I’m back in the swing of things, so I’ll be back on track soon.

Did any of you set any goals for your 100 days?

The Weigh-In

321 lbs, down 5.

I’m pleased. There was some water-weight in there, but I know there was some fat-loss as well.

Good things: Stayed out of fast food restaurants until my trip to Orlando. I did some kind of exercise every day. My consumption of fruits and veggies is way up.

Bad things: Had a burger during my trip to Orlando.

How did you do? Lost any? What did you do right? What did you do wrong?

Exercising at BlogOrlando?

I traveled to Orlando Thursday evening so I could attend BlogOrlando. I’ll probably write a post about it on a more relevant blog and link to it from here, so if you’re interested in blogging geek stuff, check back. (UPDATE: BlogOrlando Trip Report)

But, I bet most of you don’t give a crap. :-) On to the exercising.

Workouts while I was traveling - Thursday evening was core abdominal exercises in the hotel room. Friday - put it this way: I am extremely sore today from all the walking. At least 3 miles around the town of Winter Park, in 90 degree heat, wearing long pants and a dress shirt. Good thing I wear t-shirts under dress shirts, but I was wet and clammy all day. Even with all the exercise, there was no back pain so the core exercises are working.

Today, I just want to sit with my feet up today, but we have soccer this afternoon. I’m planning a nice easy 1-mile walk this evening, which should help to pump the lactic acid out of my muscles. Tomorrow, I’d like to challenge myself to doing 2 miles.

It’s official - I’m off to a good start!

I’m already feeling better. You know that puffy feeling you get when you’ve been eating poorly? Is that bloating? I don’t know these things, what with not having a vagina and all.

Anyway, that feeling is gone, and I can feel myself sitting and standing straighter after just a couple days of core exercises. Nothing motivates like feeling better!

Jennifer commented on an earlier post that she’d posted “before” pictures, and you can check them out at Jenn Loses Weight. She got off to a good start also, using The Firm plan.

Promise, Promises

I promised someplace that I would actually post a “Before” picture. I can’t believe I did that, and can’t find the written evidence, but never let it be said that I didn’t keep my word:

Before-Side on day one of the hundred day head start Before-Front on day one of the hundred day head start

Oh god, I posted that.

Weigh-in this morning was (gulp!) a robust, post-BM 326 lbs!

Sitting on your ass with an ankle injury, eating fudge all summer does that to a man.

Day 1/100

Sprained AnkleYes, I know I have a lot of “Day 1/100″s. I had a good excuse this time. Yeah, that felt worse than it looks.

But, here we are 6 weeks later, ready to rock and roll. Last night was a 1-mile, 20-minute walk - nothing strenuous, just nice and easy to break in the muscles and sweat a little. Man, did I sweat. Muggy can’t describe how bad it was - oppressive comes closer.

I took along a walking companion to keep me honest about taking it easy. I do that every few days to force me to keep it short and easy, so my body has time to recover after a few of the more strenuous days. Tried to get my daughter out on her new rollerblades, but she wasn’t feeling confident yet so she stuck with doing circles on the back porch.

So, I’m feeling satisfied. I did the hardest thing - I took the first step.

Did you?

Ch- Ch- Ch- Changes, and some plans

Ok, we’ll start with the health stuff first: I’ll be starting back walking tonight. Day 1/100

Woot!

I still have soreness in the ankle in the morning, and when I get tired in the evening, but I’ve been exercising it lightly using exercise bands I bought at Wal-mart for $20. I’ve also been playing with my new Wii. Baseball and golf are tough on the ankle due to the spinning motion you need to use to get it to work best. But boxing kicks ass! Very much like cardio-boxing. I’m trying to come up with a simple way to rig the exercise bands and the Wii remote/nunchuck so my arms and chest get a resistance workout as well.

As for changes…

If you know much about domain names, you’ve noticed that I have this blog, and several others, on sub-domains of hundreddayheadstart.com. The primary domain is where I post about the sponsored review industry, but when I first picked up the domain it was intended to be for this blog and subject exactly.

I used this domain earlier this year to just get some thoughts off my chest, not really sure if i would stick with that subject or not. The good news is that I did, and I also restarted this health blog. So, I’m making some changes.

I picked up a new domain for the sponsored review blog: Bloggerista.net. Over the weekend, I moved the posts from HDHS to the new domain, now hosted at godaddy.com and powered by Wordpress. I’m really excited about making the move to WP and excited about the capabilities. It takes a bit more technical knowledge to get set up than Blogger; Blogger is definitely the most intuitive, easy-to-use platform for blogging. But, WP does so much more.

So, that move is done, mostly. The HDHS domain has a redirect script for now, until the search engines catch up. In a couple weeks, I’ll be making another change: I’ll be shutting down the subdomains and moving this health blog back where it belongs: www.hundreddayheadstart.com. I’ll also be moving it over to Wordpress as well.

That’s all for now. I’ll report in tomorrow, let you know how it goes tonight with the ankle and all.

Maybe I was a little ambitious

I underestimated just how much the pain of my injuries would take out of me. In addition to the ankle, I have road-rash on both knees and elbows, both elbows are swollen, and my ribs are bruised. All that from one fall, if you can believe it.

Being forty years old sucks.

I just couldn’t do any exercise. Physically, I’m a wreck. Obviously, I need to take a few more days to recover. Last night, my ribs hurt so much I couldn’t fall asleep.

However, I did keep my diet goal in check - 1,699 calories. I can do better, but 1800 is a prime fat-burning zone for me. I lose weight at that level, without feeling hungry and cheating. When I add the exercise and walking back in the mix, I should begin to drop weight steadily. For now, though, I’m sticking with the diet challenge. When I’m capable of more, I’ll do more.

Coming up for air

I’m still around.

My wife’s surgery went well, better than expected really. Still, I had some moments of concern.

The surgeon told us it would take an hour and fifteen minutes if it went well, to three hours if it went badly. They called me in right at 3 hours. I’d seen the parade of people going out of the waiting room to recovery and was silently freaking out as the clock moved forward. I was called in thinking I was going to the recovery room to see her, but instead I was directed to a small “consult room”. I looked at the nurse, but she didn’t make eye contact and turned away.

I sat down and located the wastebasket in case I needed to throw up.

The surgeon came in and told me everything was fine. I sighed audibly and told him he had me worried (understatement of the year). He apologized for not sending out word sooner, but he’d run into a little trouble and it took time to work through it.

So, she’s home now, thankfully, and we can begin the process of returning to normalcy.

——

Of course, I didn’t get in my walks. I got in a lot of walking, burned calories and worked my legs, but no sweating or breathing hard. So, no, I don’t count it. I’m ok with it. I did really well during the prior weeks, and will be able to start right back into it tonight.

Oh yeah, for core strength tonight: Crunches.

Starting over, again!

I made it 13 days in a row, and missed yesterday. I spent the afternoon mowing and dehydrated myself. I suppose I could count the mowing as my exercise, but it was a riding mower. ;-(

How did I dehydrate myself? I mowed the whole lawn in first gear. Super-slow. I was ticked off at the world and wanted to be alone. Mowing gives me time to work it out.

But, the beauty of the hundred day head start is that I don’t have to wait for some event in my life to pass before starting again. Those 13 days just make it easier to restart, in a little better shape. It would be easy to wait this week. My wife goes in for surgery on Tuesday. But, I’m going for it anyway. Started today, Day 1/100.
