Five Bite Diet

Came across this one this evening: Taking several bites out of eating

The crux is, skip breakfast, have five bites of something with protein at lunch, five bites at dinner. Pretty simple. But it sure does risk missing a whole bunch of nutrients.

I don’t think it’s for me.

Update:

Wow, seeing a teenager commenting that she’s going to try it really shook me up. I posted this because I don’t think it’s a good idea. I don’t often recommend against a specific idea (I think Kimkins was the only thing so far), and usually take the passive-aggressive approach like I did above by saying it isn’t for me.

So, let me be clear - it isn’t for YOU, either!

Think about it this way: How many calories can you get into one bite of something moderately healthy - a piece of chicken, maybe? 100, tops? So, 500+500=1000.

That isn’t enough, and isn’t safe for very long! Growing bodies need PROTEIN and VITAMINS and even some CARBS and FAT. Balance it, keep it in moderation, but don’t try this STARVATION diet.

I have a special name for that diet. It’s called Anorexia.

That is seriously the dumbest thing I have ever heard! That guy starved himself and wrote a book about it! I don’t think you should EVER skip breakfast–that’s what kick starts your metabolism in the morning. If you seriously only take 10 bites of food a day, your body is going to go into starvation mode and start hanging onto every calorie it can.

I don’t claim to know crap about it, but in my humblest of opinions, I still think the best “diet” is the one where you eat lots of tiny meals per day. This keeps the metabolism going, gives you the food you need and the energy you need to also maintain an active lifestyle. Or what about weight watchers? I hear a lot of people have success that way.

    I agree with you, Caroline.

Tia, DO NOT do this. It isn’t safe, especially for growing children.

so it isn’t healthy… fine, but neither is my self-confidence level. Can anyone help me? How about give me the money to eat healthy… and if you say it costs just as much to be unhealthy as it does healthy I will reach through this screen and slap you myself. I hate being fat and I hate not being able to do anything about it. Besides, when someone is fat and out of control they will probably only be able to eat 5 bites for breakfast and then devert to fat-hood again and eat three lunches. Don’t be judgemental… just help me. No pills though, I can’t stomach that… I would rather just not eat… if only it were that simple!

I don’t know that I can help you. I’m right there with you. All I can say is that I’m fighting it every day. Some days I win, some days I lose. But, I’m finally focusing on the long run, and not letting my occasional failures drive me back into compulsive eating.

I can’t tell you how to do it, nor what will work for you. You’re going to have to figure that out for yourself. And you’re right, having just 5 bites will set a person up for a binge later on. Another reason why this diet is just dumb.

thanks Tim… I suppose the fight leaves me speechless. I was under 1000 calories yesterday and today I have had around 330 (so far; it is only 4pm). I struggle with the nights more than the days. I just want to be able to move freely and feel comfortable in my clothes. I guess we can all say that at one time or another. Anyhow, thanks for the encouragement and I wish you the very very best!!!

This diet isn’t so bad. Which I made a slight modification. I do eat 5 bites for breakfast, 5 lunch and 5 dinner. The first couple of weeks I literally thought I would starve to death but now I feel fine. I exercise at night and I must say I feel and look much better than I did. I have plenty of energy and knowing how many bites to eat per meal helps me to mentally stop overeating. I like this diet. It may not be for everyone but this is the one for me. I’ve lost 50 pounds since January.

I agree 100% with Angie. This is not a diet for everybody, nor is this a diet that promotes anorexia. I have done this diet and lost about 25 lbs. in a month. I have since kept if off for the last two months. What I have gotten out of this diet is self control. I over eat a lot, and while staying close to Dr. Lewis’ plan I can now realize that I’m really not that hungry and I don’t need to clean my plate. The proportions we Americans eat is absolutely ridiculous. We would be completely healthy and happy with half the amount of food served to us, yet we always tend to want and eat more until we feel sick to our stomach (or maybe just me!!!).
This diet is not something to stay on forever. As Angie did, she modified it a little to help suit her needs better. These are just guidelines, if you are serious about losing weight, give this a try. If five bites is not even close to enough to fill you up, change this program to the six bite diet, or seven bite diet.
In the end, this diet will help you with self control, with eating proper proportions, and will help you know when you are actually full, and not just craving more food because it tastes good.
On another note, the way I do the diet now, after I lost the large portion of weight I initially wanted, is to stick to the diet during the weekdays, not to a “t” but to it’s guidelines, and on weekends, I will eat normally, yet in smaller proportions as I did pre-five bite diet.
I know the good old doc says eat anything you want, which is fine, but I found for myself, if I’m going to put the effort into this diet, and have a legitimate goal, then I’m going to try my hardest to eat as healthy as I can in my five bites. I had read on another forum about people talking about choking because of shoving so much food into their mouth because they are only allowed five bites. If you are the type of person to do that, then this diet is not for you…HAVE SOME SELF CONTROL and you will be fine. I used to be quite large myself, and I think there are only a few reasons that are the cause of being fat other than the individual themselves. If we all just watch what we eat, and use whatever method or guidelines that work for us, we would be a much healthier nation! Thanks if you got this far in reading!!!

Got something to say?
